Essay & Video Competition AFMAM Dwipantara Team 2019


As a youth, we believe that our role is to support ASEAN-Australia relations. To fully support intercultural tolerance we are participating in the 5th ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting (AFMAM) 2019. We will discuss about "The Role of ASEAN-Australia Youth in Advancing ASEAN-Australia Friendly Relationship". The DWIPANTARA TEAM, will show our role as a youth in this meeting that will concern in intercultural tolerance which is consisted of 6 talented students from different backgrounds :

Tolerance Culture Through Dwipantara Youth Project: CEO (Corporation, Equality and Open Minded) As the Bridge of ASEAN and Australia Friendship

Human is social creature that unable to living alone, humans also need help from others. Likewise, many countries builds bilateral relations recognition. Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which aims to increase the economic growth, social progress and cultural development of its member countries, promoting peace, security and stability at the regional level, and increasing the opportunity to discuss differences among its members peacefully. Furthermore, how ASEAN + 1 (Australia) create friendly relations?

ASEAN member countries are domiciled in Southeast Asia. Thus several inhibiting factors; geographic, cultures, and politics Australia are neighborhood with ASEAN member countries with cultures differences. In fact, ASEAN which consists of 10 countries with cultures diversity, it’s a challenge how to build strong friendship ASEAN and Australia.

There are several problems that arise in ASEAN that impacts on the difficulties of Australia to enter ASEAN. Youth tolerance culture awareness are extremely less. The tolerance culture is the problem nowadays on lifestyle, but the peoples and youth is not yet aware about this issue, which is very easy for an individual to berate others through social media.

Relationship in economic, bilateral or political interests between countries will not be a good things if written agreement are doesn’t happen. Nonetheless, without being accompanied by tolerance culture, its friendship will not intertwine. For example, the issue of immigrants that occur in ASEAN and Australia, immigration law must be strengthened in case many people go abroad, to minimize the negative impacts such spreading radicalism, illegal migrant and human trafficking. This case has been discussed in Supplementary Activities under DGICM + Australia Consultion. Friendship describe as a system, if there is one component doesn’t work, it will be impact both of system. Youth genes role are to handle related issues, so ASEAN and Australia can optimizing and advance the relationship with Dwipantara Youth Project called CEO, tolerance culture component related with youth leadership skills concepts below:

1. C (Cooperation) : Diplomacy and Team-working

2. E (Equality) : Respectfulness and Clarity

3. O (Open Minded) : Positive Reinforcement and Conscientious


Millennial genes dominate on social media, indeed as a bridge of friendship will create by ASEAN and Australia to advance friendship. Relationships that will be formed more effectively if through appropriate media, so the cultural perspective of youth tolerance will improves. With the issue of tolerance, Dwipantara Youth Project brings an idea to answer the problem of tolerance. Through program that integrated with social media (Youtube, Instagram and Facebook as media literacy campaign.

Young people can spread the value of goodness that can build a spirit of tolerance. Through Dwipantara Youth Project, value of goodness to build a spirit of tolerance through ASEAN and Australian friendship will be possible. Without tolerance culture, relations will not going well. Being youth generation, it is our duty to be an agent of change.
