Thai Craft

Phuang Malai


In Thai, the word Phuang means a ‘string’ or ‘bunch’ and Malai means ‘’Jasmine". Phuang Malai is the local name for a flower garland that you will almost certainly see during your stay in Thailand. This symbol for luck and respect is found everywhere. These garlands are made from fresh flowers. Chained malai is a series of rounded malais connected together which resemble a chain.

Malai chum rui มาลัยชำร่วย or souvenir malai, the smallest form of malai, is usually given as a souvenir or gift to a large group of people. These malais are customarily given for respected one and special day such as in Mother’s day, birthday parties, and as lucky symbol.

On craft session, SUIC Team provided things to used (long size needle, fresh roses, local jasmines, and thread). The unique technic to connect structure (chain) with young jasmines petal in thread with 5 directions.



Thailand Local Food

For the second day in the class, all of student learned about Thailand traditional food. On the first session, we learned about how to made LUK CHUP (Mung Been Sweets) the traditional food with main ingredient is dried Mung Bean. Mung Bean has green-flesh outside, but rinse and soak the Mung Bean in water for 6 hours and steamed in a cheesecloth line steam about 20 Minutes until cooked well, then beans will turn white (the flesh peeled off)

In Bandung, Indonesia you might also found Luk Chup in traditional bakery store. They would find in different shape as the mini/small appearance. For the example, small chili, eggplants, fruits. Peoples in Thailand served Luk Chup as traditional sweet appetizer. International student tried to made based on paper recipes. The most special on this recipe Chef lead us to used aromatic candle to made the Mung Bean dough has different and special aroma. So, when you tried to ate the Luk Chup, sweet and traditional aromatic candle mixed well.
