Gifted program standards are necessary features of ensuring the learners in our society and adequately identified and nurtured in the context of school settings. In order of talent search and programming to occur systematically and ensure equity, it is essential that teachers are educated in the relevant theory, research, pedagogy, organization skills and management techniques to develop and sustain classroom opportunities for these gifted, and talented and learners.-Johnson and Tassel-Baska, 2006
Characteristic of a Headstart Teacher for Gifted and Talented
Ability to Motivated High Academic Engagement and Competence. Most student were engaged in academic activities most of the time, even when the teacher left the room.
Excellence Class Management. Teachers effective classrooms managed student behavior, student, and instructional aides and specialist well, using a variety method
Ability to Foster a Positive, Reinforcing, Cooperative Environment. These classrooms were positive places. The rare discipline problems were handled constructively. Student received a lot positive reinforcement for their accomplishment, both privately and publicly, and students were encouraged to cooperate with each other
Teaching Skills in Context. Word-level, comprehension, vocabulary spelling, and writing skills were typically taught in the context of actual reading and writing task
An Emphasis Literature. The learner selected books from extensive classroom collections. The teachers read literature and conducted author studies.
Much Reading and Writing. Teacher set aside 45 minutes of language arts, providing long uninterrupted period of reading and writing.
A match between accelerating Demands on Student Competencies. The teacher set high but realistic expectations and consistently encouraged learners to try more challenging ( but not overwhelming) tasks
Encouraging Self-Regulation. Teachers taught learners to choose skills when they faced a tasks rather than wait for the teacher to dictated a particular skill or strategy.
Connection Across Curricula. Teachers made explicit connections across the curriculum-providing students the opportunities to use the skills they were learning. Reading and writing were integrated with other subject
